An outstanding original painting by American artist Wesley E. Johnson, circa 1980s. A large-scale abstract Expressionist acrylic on canvas by California artist Wesley E. Johnson (B. 1934). This composition tends towards pigments that are darker and perhaps more intense than some of Johnson's other works but is still fully rooted in the California style of Abstract Expressionism. Johnson's works generally show a proclivity towards light and landscape that pervaded the collective work of west coast artists like Thiebaud and Diebenkorn. This tendency was not present in the east coasts earlier, at times more cerebral explorations of the Expressionist movement. This work is one of the most exciting and thought provoking of Johnson's works produced during the 1980s and suggests a correlation to the earlier east coast abstract Expressionist movement. Newly stretched and framed, it is signed in the lower right corner.
